OMAR’S ‘BLAME THE ACCOUNTANT’ ALIBI WON’T ADD UP, PR GURU WARNS
Famed media expert Michael Levine predicts Rep. Ilhan Omar’s explanation for major discrepancies in her financial disclosures will fail the public credibility test.
Omar disclosed assets valued at up to $30 million on her 2024 financial form, then reported less than $100,000 in assets the following year. Her office maintains that she is not a millionaire, is uninvolved in her husband’s businesses, and relied on the accountant who prepared the documents.
Levine, founder of Boundless Media USA and author of Authentic P.R., called that defense “a communications disaster wrapped inside a credibility crisis.”
“Blaming the accountant is one of Washington’s oldest and lamest escape routes,” Levine said. “The public understands a simple fact: Your name is on the form. If the numbers swing from millions to thousands, people expect serious answers—not finger-pointing.”
A watchdog group has urged the House Ethics Committee to obtain Omar’s financial records after the Office of Congressional Conduct voted 5-1 to recommend dismissing its investigation.
“This story will not disappear because a committee wishes it away,” Levine added. “In public relations, unanswered questions don’t shrink; they grow teeth. Omar needs documents, details and complete transparency. Anything less will look like evasion, and voters can smell evasion from a mile away.”
